Water Deeply

It’s better to water the roots deeply to avoid tree root damage due to drought stress.

The best method is to use a soaker hose that saturates the soil. The hose should cover the area between the trunk and the outer drip line. This is where the canopy ends. You’ll need to use enough water to reach the deep roots 12 inches below ground level.

Mulch

Mulching is an excellent way to protect the overall health of the root system. The organic matter:

  • Prevents the soil from drying out
  • Smothers weeds
  • Regulates the soil temperature
  • Decomposes and provides vital nutrients
  • Prevents erosion

You should set down a layer of mulch at least five inches away from the trunk all the way to the drip line. Aim for a layer about three to four inches deep.

Aerate the Soil

It’s good tree root care practice to let the soil dry thoroughly between waterings. This opens up air pockets and ensures that the roots can breathe. Every so often, you should also carefully dig small holes to add extra oxygen.

Aside from that, try not to put anything heavy directly above the roots. Where you can, keep this zone a low-traffic area to prevent soil compaction.

Give Your Tree Space

When choosing your tree, consider how big it will get. Then plan accordingly so the mature tree has plenty of space. Roots grow at a voracious pace, and if there’s not enough space, you could have issues like girdling roots.

It’s also best to remove grass and other plants with invasive root systems. Otherwise, these will compete with your tree for resources.

Use a Root Trainer

This is a container that you keep above ground. The tree sends out a tap root that dries out in the air. This is a type of root pruning that stimulates growth and encourages the sapling to create a stronger network.

Make Sure the Roots Have Space

Whether you’re growing your tree in the garden or a container, you need to ensure that the roots have plenty of space. In the garden, this means checking that the soil is rich and friable around two feet down. In a potted tree, this means choosing a container with ample room.

Provide Proper Nutrition

You should regularly test the soil for pH and nutrient deficiencies and make adjustments accordingly. Find out what the ideal acidity levels for your plant are and adjust the soil accordingly. If the soil’s too acidic, you can add lime. If it’s not acidic enough, sulfur adds a kick.

Do you want to stimulate growth? Consult a professional on the right formulation to choose. While it’s tempting to add lots of nitrogen, you might burn the roots inadvertently. Therefore, always add it in a balanced formulation with phosphorus and potassium.

Consult the Professionals

It can be challenging to deal with roots because you don’t really see them. Get the answers right every time by hiring a certified arborist. They can help you skip the guessing games about nutrient quantities and moisture levels.
