Is the tree damaged permanently enough to die off? How do tree branches form?
Branches grow from apical meristems or shoot buds. If a limb breaks, the tree shuts that section off to stop decay from spreading. Then, it activates a dormant bud nearby to reignite new branch growth so that the tree can strengthen again.
In a way, your tree changes permanently. However, you’re not usually left with a broken tree. Within a few years, the broken limb will be no more than a stump, and other branches would have grown into place.

Sometimes, the branch itself stays stable, but the bark shows signs of damage. Smooth out any jagged edges using a clean cut.
If there are sections of bark that are barely hanging on, it’s better to remove them. If a piece is starting to peel away but still relatively stable, fix it in place with grafting tape.
Can You Fix a Broken Tree Limb?
You might think that you can simply graft a broken limb back together. This is usually possible with smaller branches, but just be aware that the join will never be as strong as it was before. It’s also easier said than done.
Think of it much as you would reattaching someone’s arm. You need to line up all the vascular tissue perfectly so that moisture and nutrients can flow freely. It’s possible but very difficult without the right expertise.
In the interim, you need to support the join by applying grafting tape. This only provides enough support for smaller branches. Anything with significant weight will rip away.
Why do you want to reattach the broken branch? It is not usually worth the effort. The tree also won’t form a callous properly, which might make it easier for decay to spread.
